CARDIO--THORACIC SURGERY
MIRAJ HEART INSTITUTE
WANLESS HOSPITAL,, MIRAJ

The Wanless Hospital was founded in 1894 in the small town of Miraj, in southwestern India by Sir, Dr. William Wanless, (1865 to 1933) a missionary physician of the American Presbyterian Church and has served the people of this area for over one hundred years.
Today, Wanless Hospital (Miraj Medical Center) is the most fully equipped referral center for an area of 50,000 square miles with a population of 20 million. It is multi-specialty Charitable Hospital and has provided low cost care to the very poor and underprivileged sections of society who have no hope of receiving treatment for cardiac ailments.
Dr. R. K. Padhi, an Indian Cardiac surgeon trained in Canada, and Dr. A. G. Fletcher, General and Thoracic surgeon from the USA, performed the first successful Open-Heart Operation in India at Miraj in April 1962. A Grant from ASHA (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad) awarded in 1994, made possible the construction of a beautiful new building, The Miraj Heart Institute, designed for efficient, coordinated diagnosis, treatment and surgical care of Heart patients and provides for state of the art Comprehensive Cardiac Care under one roof.

The Miraj Heart Institute is a Tertiary referral Centre for Congenital & Acquired Cardiac diseases as well as Thoracic & Vascular problems, both Elective as also Emergent, catering to the needs of patients from the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa.

INFRASTRUCTURE:
The Miraj Heart Institute has Two Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and Two operating suites.

Also, it has Biphasic Defibrillators and Dual Chamber pacemakers for Sequential Cardiac temporary pacing and a portable Doppler machine for bedside vascular evaluation. Both these ICU’s have well trained and dedicated Medical, Nursing and Para-medical staff competent to manage critical Cardiac cases and handle nearly all cardiac Emergencies proficiently.

MISSION OF THE PROGRAM: CARE – COMPASSION - CHARITY

The cost of Cardiac Interventions and Surgery in India is very high (Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 300,000 per patient) and such facilities are available at private Corporate Hospitals, which are affordable only to the upper middle and rich classes. The Government has a few State funded hospitals in bigger cities like Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur where Cardiac care is provided at subsidized cost. However because of the large number of patients seeking treatment not all patients can avail and benefit form these Government Hospitals. The Miraj Heart Institute provides subsidized Cardiac interventional and surgical care (Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 150,000 per patient) with a very high level of professional skill and a compassionate approach.

A small baby being prepared for Surgery

70 years old patient recovering after Bypass Surgery
We treat almost the whole spectrum of Congenital and Acquired Heart Diseases as well as perform Thoracic and Vascular Surgery. Cases are as widely ranging as a few days old baby taken up for a Blalock Tausig’s Shunt / Balloon Pulmonary Valvotomy to a 75 year old patient undergoing Coronary Artery Revascularisation. (Bypass Surgery or Coronary Angioplasty with stenting). Our surgical results are comparable with the best Corporate Hospitals in India but at less than half the cost.

The Miraj Heart Institute has an ongoing Visiting program wherein Cardiac Surgeons, Cardiologists, Cardiac Anesthetists, Perfusionists and Operating room Nurses from the US and Canada regularly visit and provide their professional expertise and help our team to improve further and provide better care.

Visiting Overseas Teams

We have very Economical and Cost-effective Package Charges for all the procedures which significantly help the poor and needy patients to avail of our advanced Cardiac diagnostic and treatment capability.

The Government as well as Private Charitable Institutes have recognized this and regularly provide funds for patients undergoing Cardiac surgery. The Government of Maharashtra has selected the Miraj Heart Institute to provide treatment for patients’ below the poverty line who come under the Jeevan Dai Yojana Scheme.

FUNDS AVAILABLE FROM LOCAL CHARITIES AT MIRAJ HEART INSTITUTE:
Jeevan Dayee Yojana Fund
Prime Minister’s Fund Chief Minister’s Fund
Sir Ratan Tata Trust Fund

Patients needing Cardiac Surgery / Interventions are helped by the Wanless Hospital to secure the above funds so that their Heart surgery is performed at a very low cost. Many times the patient does not have to pay anything as we are able to muster sufficient funds from various charities to meet the expenses for the Surgery. Despite this the need is great and funds are limited, hence only a few patients can be helped.

PROJECT: GIFT OF LIFE
Children and young Adults form an important subset of our patients needing Cardiac surgery. The prevalence of Rheumatic fever continues to be high in India leading to Rheumatic heart disease in the young patients. So also, Congenital heart disease manifests itself in early childhood. Both these afflictions of the Heart cripple these children and interfere with their overall mental and physical growth. It also hinders their education and training and deprives them of a chance to take part in society successfully.
Most of these ailments need early surgical correction before the Heart fails otherwise they have a very poor chance of reaching adulthood. Such Cardiac diseases are the stumbling blocks, which cause these children to falter and fall at the very beginning of life’s great race. We at the Miraj Heart Institute are committed to change this stumbling block into a stepping stone for these unfortunate children and help them run this great race of life successfully, with dignity and grace.

Operated Children at discharge

If these children receive proper surgical care at the right time they certainly go on to be active and responsible members of their family and society. It is an investment for the future to build a healthy nation.
The “Gift of Life” Project is the Miraj Heart Institute’s way of involving affluent sections of society to participate in erasing the scourge of cardiac disease in our country. Whether you are an individual, a corporate or an aid foundation, this project helps you reach out to people with heart disorders, especially the young among the rural populace where such incidences are high. Your help empowers our Mission to provide Comprehensive Cardiac Care with Compassion and Charity for the needy and underprivileged sections of society.
